☕ Coffee, Pie, and a Surprise

Part 1:

The Woman in the Fountain

The fountain glowed red for another few seconds.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the wind seemed to pause.

Maren stood frozen beside Theo, her heart still racing from whatever had just happened.

One second they had been inches apart. Next second she had been thinking about kissing him. Then the fountain had exploded.

Not exactly ideal timing.

Beside her, Theo hadn’t let go of her hand. Neither of them mentioned it.

The water churned beneath the lantern light, glowing red from somewhere deep below.

Zadie stared at it.

Iris stared at it.

Ravi looked ready to fight it.

The Mirror Boy stared from a puddle near the fountain’s edge with eyes wider than Maren had ever seen.“Oh no,” he whispered.

That frightened Maren far more than the fountain. The Mirror Boy was usually strange.Tonight he seemed worried.Very worried.

The courtyard grew quiet.

Everyone waited.

And waited.

And waited…..

Finally Ravi sighed.“Well?”

Nothing happened.

A few leaves drifted across the brick path.

The fountain bub

Then a woman’s voice floated up from the water.

“Oh honestly.”

Everyone jumped.The voice sighed dramatically.

“They could’ve at least given me a staircase.”

The water rippled. A hand appeared. Long fingers covered in gold rings. Then dark curls. Then two perfectly arched eyebrows.

And slowly, as though emerging from the world’s most luxurious bath, a woman climbed out of the fountain.

She wasn’t wet. Not even a little.

Maren immediately noticed this because absolutely everything else was.The grass was soaked.

The lanterns were dripping.Theo’s curls were damp.Iris’s shawl looked like it had survived a hurricane.

Meanwhile this woman looked ready for a magazine cover.

She stepped onto the fountain ledge.

A ruby-colored dress flowed around her like liquid velvet. Black curls tumbled over one shoulder.Gold bracelets glimmered at her wrists.

She looked around slowly.

Taking everything in.

The ivy-covered buildings.The lanterns.The café.The residents.The ghosts.

Then she smiled.

A beautiful smile. Dangerous, probably…..But beautiful.

“Well.”

Her eyes sparkled.

“This is significantly prettier than I expected.”

Silence.

The woman blinked.

“Oh good.”

She relaxed immediately.

“You can all see me?”

Nobody answered.

Ravi cleared his throat.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked offended.

“Have we even had coffee yet?”

Mateo stepped forward from the crowd.

“I can make coffee.”

The woman pointed at him.

“I like him.”

Mateo grinned.

“I like you too.”

“Excellent!!”

Maren laughed. She couldn’t help it.The woman immediately turned toward her.

“There she is.”

“What?”

“The only person here who seems happy to see me.

”A smile tugged at Maren’s lips making it even bigger.

“I’m still deciding.”

“Fair.”

The woman hopped down from the fountain.

Elegant.

Effortless.

Entirely too graceful for someone who had just climbed out of a supernatural water feature.

“I’m Lucinda.”She paused.“Lucinda Fox.”The name seemed to fit her perfectly.

Like she’d selected it herself. Probably while drinking champagne some late night.

Theo finally spoke.

“Do you know what’s happening?”

Lucinda looked around.

“The year first.”

“The year?”

“Very important.”

Eloise stepped forward.

“It’s 2026.”Lucinda froze.“Oh dear.”

The courtyard immediately erupted.

“What?”

“What happened?”

“How long have you been gone?”

“Are you a ghost?”

“Where did you come from?”

“What was in the fountain?”

Lucinda raised both hands.

“My goodness.”She laughed.“You people ask far too many questions.”

“And you answer none of them,” Ravi muttered.

“I answer the fun ones.”

“Are you a ghost?”Iris asked.

Lucinda smiled.“Oh, definitely.”

At that exact moment she looked up. Past everyone. Past the lanterns.Past the rooftop of the Greenhouse Café.And saw Violet. The cellist ghost sat quietly on the edge of the roof. Watching.Curious.Gentle.A little cautious. Like someone peeking through a doorway before deciding whether to enter.Violet expected Lucinda to look away.

Most people did.

Even the other ghosts.

Instead Lucinda smiled directly at her.As if she had known she was there all along. For one strange second it felt like they were the only two people in the courtyard.

Then Lucinda tilted her head.

A little smile touching her lips.

“Well hello there.”

Violet blinked. And for the first time in seventeen years…This ghost got butterflies.

Down below, nobody noticed.Except maybe Eloise Hart.

Eloise noticed everything.

She glanced from Violet to Lucinda and smiled quietly to herself.

“Oh,” she whispered.“Now that’s interesting.”🌹✨❤️👻
