The Gardens Part 2

☕ Coffee, Pie & Surprise

Part Eight: Tiny Miracles

The idea started on a Tuesday.

Which was unfortunate.

Most bad ideas seemed to start on Tuesdays.

At least according to Violet.

Lucinda disagreed.

She insisted Tuesdays were full of possibility.”Nobody expects anything from a Tuesday.”

“That’s because it’s Tuesday.”

“Exactly!”Lucinda pointed triumphantly.

“A perfect disguise…”

Violet had absolutely no idea what that meant.

At this point she was getting used to it.

The two ghosts sat on the edge of the fountain watching the afternoon unfold around them. The Gardens had settled back into its usual rhythm.

Coffee cups moved in and out of the Greenhouse Café.

People came and went.

The wind carried the scent of rosemary and damp earthy flowers throughout the courtyard.

Everything felt peaceful.Which lasted approximately six minutes.

Lucinda suddenly sat upright.

“Oh.”Violet sighed.”What now?”

“Look.”Lucinda pointed toward the herb garden.Iris stood beside a row of lavender, frowning at something in her hands.

“What am I looking at?”

“She’s worried.”

Violet looked closer.”How do you know?”

“Because she keeps pretending she isn’t.”

That answer sat with Violet for a moment.Because Lucinda was right.Iris smiled and waved at passing residents. Then immediately returned to frowning at the same plant.

“Oh.”Violet nodded.”I see it.”

“Of course you do.”

“What does that mean?”

Lucinda smiled.”You notice everything.”

For some reason that made Violet unexpectedly shy.

Across the courtyard, Theo was helping Maren carry chairs after a music gathering.

Neither seemed particularly focused on the chairs.

Lucinda followed Violet’s gaze.

“There they go again.”

“What?”

“The long conversations.”

“They like each other.”

“I know.”

“So why are you saying it like it’s a crime?”

Lucinda looked horrified….”Because it’s taking forever.”
Violet laughed.”They just met.”

“I came out of a fountain three days ago.”

“And?”

“It feels like twenty years.”

That made absolutely no sense.Yet Violet understood her perfectly.

As the afternoon drifted onward, A little later, Iris found a bundle of fresh lavender tied with golden ribbon waiting beside her garden bench.

No note.

No explanation.

Just lavender.

She smiled immediately.

Across the courtyard, Lucinda looked very pleased with herself.

“You left that there.”

“Maybe.”

“You definitely left that there.”

“I liked the ribbon.”

Violet shook her head. But she still was smiling.

The next day Mateo discovered a basket of apples sitting outside the café before sunrise.

Perfect apples.

Bright red.

Enough for several pies.

He spent the entire morning trying to figure out who left them.

Lucinda denied involvement.….Repeatedly…..But the fact that she denied it before anyone actually accused her wasn’t helping her case.

Ravi noticed that too.”You’re suspicious.”

Lucinda looked playfully offended.”That’s hurtful.”

“You brought evidence against yourself before the investigation even started.”

“Details, details…..” She purred.

Violet nearly choked on her coffee.Little by little The Gardens changed.

Not dramatically…Just slightly… In all the most important ways. A form of growing .The way gardens tend to do.

The way friendships do too!!

A note appeared in someone’s mailbox at exactly the moment they needed encouragement.

A favorite flower showed up on a doorstep.

A forgotten birthday somehow became the celebration it deserved .

Nobody knew how these things happened.

Well.Almost nobody.

One evening, Lucinda and Violet sat beneath the willow tree watching lanterns flicker to life across the courtyard.

The sky had turned soft lavender.

Music drifted from the café patio.

The whole neighborhood was glowing.

Lucinda rested her head against the tree trunk.

“They’re lovely.”

Violet followed her gaze.To Theo

.To Maren.

To Iris.

To Eloise.

Then to Mateo laughing with a customer.

To all of them.”

They really are!!” Violet agreed softly.

For a moment neither spoke

.The silence felt warm.

Comfortable.

Like Home.

Then Lucinda sat up right and straightened her posture while still looking atound lovingly.

A very dangerous sign.

“I have another idea.”

Violet groaned playfully.”Of course you do.”

“It involves lanterns.”

“No.”

“And maybe a scavenger hunt.”

“No.”

“And possibly twenty-seven handwritten clues.”

Violet stared.”Twenty-seven?”

Lucinda smiled.”I haven’t finished planning yet.”

The best part was that Violet could already feel herself saying yes.🌹☕👻❤️✨
